Unexplained
- What happened
- Between May and December 1946, nearly a thousand testimonies were collected in Sweden according to the head of the Krigsarkivet, the Swedish military archive (about two thousand according to other reconstructions), of rocket-like objects or fast lights, with a peak on August 11, when over 300 reports arrived. The Defense Staff set up a commission with the Air Force, the Navy, the radio interception service (FRA) and the Defense research institute (FOA), which suspected Soviet launches from the Baltic without finding evidence; on October 10, 1946 it stated that most observations were vague, but that some could not be explained by natural phenomena or Swedish aircraft and that radars had also recorded detections. The commission held its last meeting on December 12, 1946 without an overall explanation.
- Proposed explanation
- Many reports have been attributed to meteors (the August peaks coincide with the Perseid shower); the hypothesis of Soviet tests with captured German missiles, considered at the time by the commission, found no confirmation.
- Official investigation
- Swedish Defense Staff (committee with the Air Force, the Navy, the FRA radio service, and the FOA research institute); the U.S. Central Intelligence Group followed the reports
