Lieutenant Gorman's “dogfight” with a light over Fargo
Fargo, North Dakota (Hector Airport) · United States · Oct 1, 1948
In flight Mixed witness types
Disputed explanation
- What happened
- Around 9 p.m. Lieutenant George Gorman of the North Dakota Air National Guard, aboard a P-51 fighter, chased for about 27 minutes a light that, by his account, was faster than his aircraft, made no noise and left no trail. The light was also seen by the controller in the Hector Airport tower, who followed it with binoculars, and by the pilot and passenger of a Piper Cub. The case, taken up by Life in 1952, appears in the Project Blue Book case files, which were not found online in this search.
- Proposed explanation
- Project Sign concluded it was an illuminated weather balloon launched from Fargo at 8:50 p.m., explaining the apparent maneuvers by the movements of Gorman's own fighter (the planet Jupiter was also invoked). James McDonald and Donald Keyhoe considered the case unresolved, while the historian Jerome Clark regards the balloon explanation as plausible.
