Golfo Nuevo: the Argentine Navy pursues submarines that were never identified
Golfo Nuevo, Chubut (Valdés Peninsula) · Argentina · Jan 31, 1960 – Feb 17, 1960
Underwater Military witnesses
Unexplained
- What happened
- Between late January and February 17, 1960, units of the Argentine Navy, led by the patrol vessels ARA King and ARA Murature, pursued in the Golfo Nuevo one or possibly two submarines of unknown nationality, attacking them repeatedly with depth charges and guns without managing to sink or identify them. A small group of U.S. Navy experts took part in the searches, and a fleet anti-submarine advisor later wrote a report for the Naval General Staff. The Navy pointed to Soviet submarines, Moscow denied it, and their identity was never established; similar contacts had been reported in the same gulf as early as 1958.
- Proposed explanation
- The Argentine Navy attributed the contacts to Soviet submarines; the Soviet Union officially denied it. No identification has ever been confirmed, and the case is revived in UFO literature as an example of unidentified submerged objects (USO).
- Official investigation
- Armada Argentina (naval forces and Naval General Staff); U.S. Navy experts
