Westall 1966: the object seen by students and teachers in Melbourne
Westall High School and The Grange reserve, Clayton South (Melbourne, Victoria) · Australia · Apr 6, 1966
In flight Civilian witnesses
Unexplained
- What happened
- During the morning break (around 10:15 according to some reconstructions, around 11 according to others), students and some teachers at Westall High School saw one or more light-colored, roundish objects fly over the school, descend toward the nearby reserve The Grange and then move away, while some small aircraft seemed to follow them; estimates of the number of witnesses range from about 100 to about 300, and some reported a landing and circles of flattened grass. According to the local press of the time, the Department of Civil Aviation found no unusual aircraft and the RAAF said it had no aircraft in the area; according to testimony gathered decades later, the principal asked the students not to talk about it. A search of Australian government files conducted by Keith Basterfield found no official documents about the episode.
- Proposed explanation
- There is no official explanation. The next day the newspaper The Age suggested a weather balloon launched from Laverton, a hypothesis that Richard Saunders (Australian Skeptics, 2026) considers a very likely but unconfirmed candidate (in an update from May 2026 Saunders himself reports new information, still to be verified, that could rule out the weather balloon); other researchers, including Keith Basterfield and Charlie Wiser, have examined the hypothesis of a high-altitude balloon from the classified HIBAL program for detecting radioactivity, which at the time was launching balloons in Victoria, and a 1966 letter suggested a target towed by an aircraft. The researcher Shane Ryan disputes the balloon hypothesis, arguing that the wind was blowing in the opposite direction, an argument that Saunders rejects by citing weather forecasts and reports from the time.
