What happened

Around 8 p.m. on December 16, 1977, the crew of a C-95 from the Salvador Air Base, returning from an administrative mission, was alerted by the Vitória controller that he and seven other people were observing through binoculars, at about 20 miles and perhaps at 20,000 feet, a large object resembling a “mother ship” surrounded by smaller objects making 180-degree turns. According to the commander's report, the crew, hampered by scattered clouds, could make out only a large luminous sphere that changed in size and brightness; the controller said he had asked the Brasília center to attempt radar contact. The report was forwarded up the chain of command to the Air Force General Staff (February 1978) with no documented analysis or conclusions.
