Ruwa 1994: the account of the Ariel School students

Ariel School, Ruwa (near Harare) · Zimbabwe · Sep 16, 1994

On land Civilian witnesses

Unexplained

What happened
At about 10 a.m., during recess, about 60 students aged 6 to 12 at a private school near Ruwa said they had seen one or more silvery objects land among the trees beyond the playing field and small figures dressed in dark clothing with large eyes; the teachers were in a meeting and most of the other students did not report anything. In the following days the children were interviewed by the UFO researcher Cynthia Hind, who had them draw what they had seen, by the BBC correspondent and, in November, by the Harvard psychiatrist John Mack, to whom some spoke of messages about protecting the environment. Two evenings earlier a luminous trail in the sky over southern Africa had prompted many reports.
Proposed explanation
No official investigation is on record. Skeptics, including Brian Dunning (Skeptoid), propose a collective suggestion fostered by the stir over the reentry of a Russian rocket stage on the evening of September 14, by interviews conducted in groups and by the influence of the interviewers; Gideon Reid (2026) stresses the role of alien-themed television programs; a prank or a dust devil have also been suggested. John Mack, on the other hand, believed that the experiences might indicate a real phenomenon not yet understood.
