Unexplained
- What happened
- AARO's consolidated annual report for fiscal year 2025, published in July 2026, states that the only maritime-domain case received in the period is the report from Navy units off Virginia, which describes about a hundred UAP in flight and two surface systems, probably unmanned. The report does not give the date of the event or the units involved: the dates on the map correspond to the period covered by the report (June 2, 2024 – May 30, 2025), which however also includes some reports of earlier events. AARO says it has an investigation under way, and a Pentagon spokesperson did not immediately respond to the press's requests for details.
- Proposed explanation
- No explanation: AARO states that it is investigating in coordination with the unit that made the report. The Debrief notes that the report does not clarify whether they were drones and unmanned platforms, possibly attributable to a foreign adversary.
