- What it contains
- Three documents of one or two pages. The FBIS dispatch reports a Radio Tupi broadcast (Rio de Janeiro, November 8, 1963): at Conde, in Bahia, a large metal sphere with window-like openings and, inside, a human body with heavy clothing and indecipherable writing had allegedly fallen; a handwritten note of November 13 on the NASC copy says the annotator asked the State Department to let them know whether the embassy had any news. The cable of November 14 asks the Salvador consulate to confirm its denial “without reservation” and reports that an object seen in the sky had been provisionally identified as a weather balloon, but that nothing had been found on the ground. The airgram of November 20 reports the consul's reply: the story was “apparently invented in Rio” and no one in the area had seen the object; according to an attached Salvador newspaper, the Brazilian Air Ministry denied any “strange object” at Conde (in the subject line of the airgram the year is mistakenly given as 1964).
- What it shows and what it does not
- It shows that in 1963 the White House NASC followed the report of the fall of a craft with a dead occupant and that the State Department, through the embassy and consulate, checked it and judged it unfounded; copies of the documents were passed to Defense and NASA. They contain no indication of an actual retrieval or of non-human material: they document instead how a report of a crash with a body on board circulated and was denied within a few days.
- How it came to light
- Published by the Department of War in the fifth PURSUE series (August 7, 2026); the stamps indicate declassification at the National Archives (NND 968063 and NND 939551).
