Jesse Marcel

Intelligence officer of the 509th Group, handled the Roswell debris

1947–1986 · Historical figures (1933–2007) · Witness

An intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group (1907–1986), in July 1947 he accompanied the debris collected near Roswell to the Fort Worth press conference. In 1978 he told Stanton Friedman that the weather balloon explanation was a cover story and that he believed the debris to be of extraterrestrial origin: the interview reopened the case. That he handled the debris is documented; the extraterrestrial interpretation is disputed and was rejected by the USAF in the 1994–97 reports, which nonetheless admitted that the weather balloon story covered Project Mogul.

Key claims
  • In 1978 he told Stanton Friedman that the weather balloon explanation was a cover story and that, in his judgment, the debris was of extraterrestrial origin.
Controversies
  • The USAF reports (1994–97) attributed the debris to a Project Mogul balloon train launched on June 4, 1947, rejecting the extraterrestrial hypothesis.
Today
The Roswell case, which his 1978 interview reopened, is cited by Elizondo in the book Imminent (2024) and by the documentary The Age of Disclosure (2025); Marcel is not found cited by name in the sources collected.
