Bass Strait 1978: the disappearance of the pilot Frederick Valentich
Bass Strait, between Cape Otway (Victoria) and King Island (Tasmania) · Australia · Oct 21, 1978
In flight Pilots
Unexplained
- What happened
- The 20-year-old Frederick Valentich, on an evening flight from Moorabbin to King Island in a Cessna 182 (registration VH-DSJ), reported by radio to Melbourne flight service that an unknown craft with intense lights was flying over him and circling him, stating that it was not an aircraft; he then reported irregular engine operation and the communication ended with some metallic noises. The air, sea and land searches, which continued until October 25, found no traces of the aircraft; an oil slick and possible debris sighted during the searches and a cowling panel consistent with a Cessna 182 found years later on the coast of an island in the strait have not been conclusively linked to VH-DSJ. The summary report of the Department of Transport, dated April 27, 1982, concluded that the cause of the disappearance had not been determined.
- Proposed explanation
- The official investigation did not determine the cause. In 1978 a spokesman for the Department of Transport suggested that the pilot, disoriented, was flying upside down or was confused by the reflections of coastal lighthouses; James McGaha and Joe Nickell (Skeptical Inquirer, 2013) argue that the lights were planets and stars and that Valentich, disoriented during a turn, entered a fatal spiral, and the air safety magazine of the Australian authority CASA (2025) favors similar causes. David Clarke and the ufologist Bill Chalker consider that, without the wreckage being found, no one can say what happened.
