U.S. Air Force Fact Sheet Concerning UFOs and Project BLUE BOOK
U.S. Air Force – Public Affairs Division, Wright-Patterson AFB · Jan 1985 · USA · Other
Original available
Text read on the official page of the National Archives, which presents it as a copy of the Air Force fact sheet of January 1985. The version on the Air Force website (af.mil) blocks automated requests and was not opened here.
- What it contains
- The fact sheet recalls that on December 17, 1969 the Secretary of the Air Force announced the closure of Project Blue Book: from 1947 to 1969 the project collected 12,618 reports, of which 701 remained “unidentified.” The decision was based on the University of Colorado report (the Condon Report), its review by the National Academy of Sciences and earlier studies. There are three conclusions: no threat to national security, no technology beyond the knowledge of the time, and “no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as ‘unidentified’ are extraterrestrial vehicles”; the fact sheet adds that there have never been extraterrestrial visitors or equipment at Wright-Patterson.
- What it shows and what it does not
- It documents the Air Force's official position at the closure of Blue Book and its numbers, including the 701 cases left without an explanation. It is a statement about the Air Force's investigations alone: it does not concern other agencies or the modern allegations about retrieval programs, and it does not attribute any particular origin to the unresolved cases.
- How it came to light
- Reproduced by the National Archives (NARA) on its reference page on Project Blue Book, as a copy of the fact sheet distributed by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in January 1985; a version is also on the Air Force website.
