Director for Defense Intelligence at OUSD(I), in late 2017 he wrote a memorandum, made public via FOIA in 2024, according to which Elizondo had exaggerated his role and had no assignments tied to AATIP; at the same time he asked AFOSI to check on a possible improper handling of classified material, an inquiry closed in 2018. Elizondo accused him in his 2021 complaint to the Inspector General; the report of his removal circulated in 2022 was refuted by emails from the Inspector General, which indicate a subsequent transfer to the DIA.
