Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter

Director of Central Intelligence (1947–1950), later on the board of NICAP

1947–1962 · Historical figures (1933–2007) · Official

Director of Central Intelligence from May 1, 1947 to October 7, 1950, from 1957 to 1962 he served on the governing board of NICAP, a civilian UFO association of which Keyhoe, his classmate at the Naval Academy, was also a member. In a 1960 statement, reported by the New York Times, he claimed that behind the scenes senior Air Force officers were seriously concerned about UFOs, but that secrecy and ridicule led citizens to regard them as nonsense. The MJ-12 documents name him as a member of the alleged committee: the attribution is considered a forgery.

Key claims

Controversies
  • An alleged Hillenkoetter–Truman letter of February 17, 1948, part of the MJ-12 corpus, copies, according to Wikipedia, a letter from Marshall to Roosevelt.
