In the historical report AARO writes that AATIP was never an official DoD program, but that after AAWSAP was canceled some people continued to use its name, and that the DIA closed the program in 2012 for lack of merit and of usefulness of its results. According to the report, the allegations of hidden extraterrestrial technology come largely from the same group linked to AAWSAP/AATIP.

AATIP and AAWSAP

What it denies and what it leaves open

It denies that AATIP was a formal program, without naming Elizondo, and acknowledges an informal use of the acronym after the end of AAWSAP; it does not assess the individual activities carried out by Elizondo.

Original words
AATIP was never an official DoD program.
Who disputes it
Elizondo, who presents himself as a former director of AATIP, called the report intentionally dishonest and says he knows of extensive classified evidence that contradicts it; former Senator Reid wrote in 2021 that he was among the original sponsors of AATIP and could attest to Elizondo's leadership role.
