The FBI file on the “Majestic 12” documents
Majestic 12 (FBI Records: The Vault)
FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) · Nov 30, 1988 · USA · FOIA release
Original available
Official FBI file, already cited by the site. The FBI server blocks automated requests and the archive copy (Wayback Machine) was not reachable: the date of November 30, 1988 and the quotation come from the Wikipedia entry that points to the file, while the National Archives' checks were read directly.
- What it contains
- The file concerns the 1988 investigation into the “Majestic 12” document, the alleged briefing for President Eisenhower on a secret committee in charge of the recovered discs, reported to the FBI's Dallas office by an AFOSI agent. According to the reconstruction based on the file, on November 30, 1988 AFOSI stated that no such committee had ever been authorized or established; the FBI judged the document “completely bogus” and closed the investigation.
- What it shows and what it does not
- It shows that as early as 1988 two federal bodies considered the MJ-12 document fake. The same conclusion emerges from the National Archives' research, which finds no trace of MJ-12 in the records of the National Security Council and notes inconsistencies in the Cutler–Twining memo of July 14, 1954 (Cutler was abroad in those days). The file does not clarify who fabricated the documents or whether it was a case of government disinformation, a hypothesis that is discussed but not proven.
- How it came to light
- Published by the FBI in its online reading room (The Vault), which collects documents already released under FOIA.
