Threats to his clearance versus the Inspector General's outcome

Luis Elizondo

Weight: Substantial

First version
May 3, 2021 · In the complaint to the Inspector General's office he reports that a senior official hinted at consequences for his security clearance and that in April 2021, even though the clearance had been renewed in January, the DCSA asked him for a new interview about the release of the videos; in 2024, under oath and in writing, he will speak of threats and attempts to suspend or revoke his and his colleagues' clearances. DoD Office of Inspector General, FOIA release DODIG-2022-000313 (with the 2017 resignation letter and a copy of the Politico article of May 26, 2021)
Second version
Feb 16, 2022 · The DoD Inspector General's Whistleblower Reprisal Investigations unit closes the case: no action on his eligibility for access to classified information was taken or threatened and the eligibility “remains intact.” The Black Vault – the DoD Office of Inspector General releases the transcript of the interview with Elizondo, February 10, 2023
Analysis
The Inspector General's office assessed retaliation in the technical sense of the regulations (formal actions on eligibility), not the informal pressures described by Elizondo, and did not rule on his role in AATIP; a request for a new interview can be experienced as a threat even if it does not lead to a suspension. In August 2024 GB News described him as still holding high-level clearances; the 2024 statements in the plural (“our security clearances”) also concern colleagues, for whom there is no public corroboration.
