The reverse engineering of recovered craft has contributed to the development of U.S. aerospace and military technologies.
Partly independent
- First attestation
- 1997 · Philip J. Corso (with William J. Birnes), Book “The Day After Roswell” (Pocket Books). Maintains that the United States recovered an alien craft at Roswell and reverse engineered its technology for military and industrial uses, in a project that he says he supervised. Senator Strom Thurmond, author of a foreword written for a different kind of book, stated that he knew of no cover-up. First documented attestation, in the sources consulted, of the idea of technological spin-offs; in 1989 Bob Lazar had spoken of an attempt at reverse engineering, without indicating applications.
- Who picked it up
- Apr 19, 2019 · Eric Davis: The notes describe a reverse-engineering program with an intact craft, to which Wilson was reportedly denied access; among the topics listed is also Corso's book (T-014). Based on documents (source given: A conversation with Admiral Wilson, who denies it; provenance not authenticated)
- Jun 5, 2023 · David Grusch: Says that the recovered material is used for reverse engineering to obtain asymmetric military advantages; under oath (July 26, 2023) he speaks of a multi-decade retrieval and reverse-engineering program. Hearsay (source given: Unnamed officials)
- Nov 13, 2024 · Luis Elizondo: Under oath he confirms that the retrieval programs were meant to reverse engineer alien craft; in the written answers he answers “yes” to the question about physics discoveries not made public. Hearsay (source given: No specific source)
- Mar 9, 2025 · Jay Stratton: In the documentary “The Age of Disclosure” he compares the race to reverse engineering to the Manhattan Project. Opinion or hypothesis (source given: Not indicated)
- Sep 9, 2025 · George Knapp: Writes that reverse engineering has been under way for some time with limited success. Hearsay (source given: Grusch's testimony and unnamed sources)
- Sep 30, 2026 · David Grusch: On Joe Rogan's podcast he says that innovations such as frequency-selective surfaces derived from the study of the artifacts and ties to them the research on magnetohydrodynamic propulsion since the 1940s. Hearsay (source given: Not indicated)
- Analysis
- The idea arises in public form with Corso's book, which according to the sources consulted combines pre-existing theories with personal claims full of factual errors; the Wilson–Davis notes, which appeared in 2019, cite Corso and so are not an independent confirmation. Since 2023 the thesis has been repeated in generic form by Grusch, Elizondo, Stratton and Knapp, who are connected to one another (edges jay-stratton → luis-elizondo “colleague,” george-knapp → david-grusch “cites”), without indicating a specific technology; only Grusch in 2026 names frequency-selective surfaces, without sources. For the recent strand AARO's reading finds support in the network, while Corso is a separate origin, predating the AAWSAP circle. AARO writes that it has no evidence for the reverse-engineering narrative and that an intelligence program extended in 2021 to protect it never recovered or reverse engineered anything: a fact that documents a compartment dedicated to the subject but, according to AARO, not the existence of material. Patents, contracts or technical documents linking a known technology to non-human material are lacking.
